Threat-Independent Column Removal and Fire-Induced Progressive Collapse: Numerical Study and Comparison
Progressive collapse is defined as the spread of an initial failure from element to element, eventually resulting in the collapse of an entire structure or a disproportionately large part of it. The current progressive collapse analyses and design methods in guidelines and codes focus on the alternate load path method. This method is suitable especially in the case of blast-induced progressive ...
متن کاملA Fire Fighter's Problem
Suppose that a circular fire spreads in the plane at unit speed. A single fire fighter can build a barrier at speed v > 1. How large must v be to ensure that the fire can be contained, and how should the fire fighter proceed? We contribute two results. First, we analyze the natural curve FFv that develops when the fighter keeps building, at speed v, a barrier along the boundary of the expanding...

OBJECTIVE To review the causes of all fire fighter line-of-duty-deaths from 1998 through 2001, and present recommendations for preventing fatalities within the specific subgroup of structure related events. METHODS Fire fighter fatality data from the United States Fire Administration were reviewed and classified into three main categories of injury. Investigations conducted through the Nation...
متن کاملبررسی کاهش شنوایی شغلی آتش نشانان تهران
Hearing loss is a controversial occupational disease in fire fighters because exposure to hazardous levels of noise in this job is so variable and unpredictable. In this study, audiometric assessments were performed on 117 fire fighters to evaluate their hearing loss. The results showed that the average fire fighter has a characteristic noise-induced threshold shift, with maximum hearing loss o...
متن کاملBreath Activity Detection Algorithm
— This report describes the use of a support vector machines with a novel kernel, to determine the breathing rate and inhalation duration of a fire fighter wearing a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus. With this information, an incident commander can monitor the firemen in his command for exhaustion and ensure timely rotation of personnel to ensure overall fire fighter safety.
